As vegan travellers, one thing that gets us really excited is discovering the innovative plant-based cafes in different cities and towns. In Germany, where there are about 2.6 million vegans, it’s impressive to see almost every supermarket offering alternatives like vegan cheese, milk, and chocolates. And this trend is only on the rise!
Yet, it comes as a surprise to so many Münchners (Munich locals) that their city has many cool and unique vegan restaurants and cafes. The fact that we can find delicious vegan options within a few kilometers of walking distance, is simply very exciting. And we’re loving every bit of it.
Whether you’re a tourist exploring Munich or planning to settle here, we assure you that you’ll always have plenty of vegan/vegetarian choices. And who knows, there might be even more eateries coming up in the future!
We wholeheartedly endorse local, homegrown, and homemade establishments, particularly those with plant-based offerings, and applaud restaurants committed to sustainable practices.
So here are our top picks for 2024:
1. Max Pett – das vegane restaurant
This restaurant in the heart of Munich city has to top our list. Named after the German professor of hygiene, Max Pett restaurant offers a delicious German cuisine with delectable desserts – and it’s all plant-based! We tried the Soy schnitzel (a plant-based version of the traditional meat schnitzel) and dumplings. The food not only tasted amazing but looked really cool too. They don’t serve alcohol so be sure to try their homemade drinks 🙂
The place itself has a cozy vibe that adds to the whole experience. Now, we won’t lie, it’s surely a bit on the expensive side, but the authentic Bavarian flavors make it fully worth. We might have gone a bit overboard and stuffed ourselves with a plate of Kaiserschmarrn (a yummy dessert) and they even threw in a complementary brownie. It was like we were in food paradise!
If you prefer the convenience of food delivery, here’s something so cool about their delivery containers – they have partnered with Vytal that provides reusable containers. (How incredible that we can cut down on so much of plastic!) So, if you’re up for trying some authentic and delicious Bavarian food in Munich, make sure Max Pett is on your radar.
2. Secret Garden vegan sushi
Munching on delicious sushi at Munich’s earliest vegan sushi spots felt like delving into Japanese food culture right here in Germany. First established in Berlin, Secret Garden is a completely plant-based restaurant that chose consciously to make traditional sushis seafood free! It was to us a complete surprise when we stumbled upon this restaurant while exploring Munich’s Viktualienmarkt. We didn’t know what to expect, but it quickly became our go-to place for eating out. We decided to try the Daruma sushi, pairing it with Tini’s green harmony dessert. Our stomachs were so beyond satisfied that we chose to walk back home, to compensate our indulgence!

3. Dr. Drooly
Picture this: it’s a gloomy, rainy day, and all you want is a cheesy, creamy and chewy pizza to lift your mood. That’s when you need to pay a visit to these pizza-doctors. They’ve mastered the art of curing your mood with high quality artisan-dough vegan pizzas – the kind you’ve never experienced before! Trust me, the truffle potato pizza will flirt with your taste buds. Drool, you will!
Back when we went in the summer of 2023, we sat outside in the corridor on a bench, but now it seems like they’ve got some seats in place for the chilly Munich winter. The best part? These pizza doctors are not just good at making pizzas; they’re friendly and happily dance around from the oven to the kitchen and back. It’s a joy to watch them love what they do in their second-hand staff clothing.
Oh, and a big plus – their payment system is entirely paperless. No need to stress about carrying cash, which, let’s be honest, can be a bit of a hassle in most places in Germany (still not a fan of that!)
4. Charly’s vegan
Even though it’s not completely vegan, this Afghan/Turkish restaurant also serves some vegetarian options, so don’t be misled by the name thinking it’s entirely plant-based. This is where I had my first meal when I moved to Munich. I popped in for lunch and was surprised to see the whole place buzzing, even on a weekday! I decided to grab the falafel durum to-go, and it was downright delicious—packed with creamy homemade hummus and crisp fresh veggies. However, the vegan mantu (Afghan dumplings) takes the spotlight on the menu – a definite must-try and truly mouthwatering!
5. DELI Kitchen
Another birthday, and out we were on another vegan adventure! This time, it was all about flammkuchen – a thin, crispy, rectangular or oval-shaped bread with veggie and cheese toppings. Now, you might be wondering, why not just call it pizza? Well, here’s the twist: flammkuchen was actually created by German farmers as a modest, homemade dish and came around urban consumers only after the ‘pizza’ became the craze that it is today.
At DELI Kitchen, they serve up a variety of flammkuchen, and the best part is most of them are plant-based with vegan cheese! A second outlet, which is a smaller cafe serves breakfast and offers a multitude of cakes. And oh, the blueberry cheesecake, also vegan, is like a cloud – soft, smooth, and just melts in your mouth. Plus, just like Max Pett, they’ve teamed up with Vytal to use reusable delivery containers.
6. Cafe Lozzi
Back when we both went vegan a few years ago, we thought, “That’s it, no more desserts or fancy treats for us.” Turns out, we were so wrong, and Cafe Lozzi is a big proof of that. Their homemade vegan cakes and tarts are not just delicious but also packed with healthy ingredients – whether it’s a zucchini dark chocolate cake or a fruity cheesecake or an L-size cinnamon bun.
The cafe’s interiors feel like an extension of your own living room, with multicultural decor and charming vintage furniture that make you more than comfortable. They’ve also got a cozy room where you can often catch artworks, exhibitions, and other cool workshops happening. We absolutely loved the vibe. Oh, and here’s a bonus – they have a stall at Cafe Ganz am Wasser in Munich’s Westpark, so make sure to check them out there too!
7. Lost Weekend
Can you imagine this: an all-vegan snacks and desserts paradise plus a week-long lineup of entertainment, including tons of open mic programs. Cafe Lost Weekend is like a throwback to our university days. Right next to the Universität, it’s got that super cool and hip vibe. Their vegan chocolate and apricot croissants have been real lifesavers each time those cravings hit us.
But here’s the catch – it’s always packed! Finding a spot to sit can be a bit challenging. So, more often than not, we end up grabbing our goodies and enjoying them in the cozy comfort of our home.
That’s all for now. But we are certain this list is going to keep extending with every month we spend in Munich. We hope you’re able to experience the authenticity of these restaurants or cafes and enjoy your time as much as we did. If you do visit any of them and love our recommendations, do share your story with us in the comments below or tag us on our instagram page so we can feature them! Look forward to hearing from you!
