Don’t we all plan our travels to just have some fun? What is all this fuss about responsible travel? You may have come across many such terms that vouch for a better way of travel – Sustainable travel, Mindful travel, Ethical travel, Regenerative travel, and so on. But why should we travel a certain way and why is it important? Unfortunately, our societies are becoming frighteningly consumerist. "Oh, did you check out the new iPhone?" "I think you should get a bigger car too!" "What did you get at the Xmas sale?" "I am considering a stay at this Luxury resort for summer!" "How many countries have you been to?" Travel, too, has become a form of consumption, whereas it mostly used to be an exchange of cultures, perspectives, and appreciation. We forget that our travel decisions – if we head there by flight or train, how long we stay there, where we stay, what we eat, what activities we take part in, what we buy, how we behave – all of these have consequences beyond our own experiences. In other words, each choice we make leaves an impact on the destination and its people. And hence, the term "responsibility" comes in. In recognising that we do play a role, and that we need to be aware and mindful of our choices on each of our trips. Be it on a short weekend trip or a long summer holiday abroad.

We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the earth as its other creatures do. ~Barbara Ward
